Also available in 1 lb. resealable bag.

FLAVOR PROFILE
Healthy sleep is important to our overall wellness but when busy thoughts or hot flashes keep you awake at night your body can suffer the consequences. Thankfully, help can be found in a teacup! A cup of our Valerian Sleep Support Honeybush will help prepare your mind and body for a good night’s sleep. This beautiful tea is a powerful blend of valerian, chamomile, spearmint, lavender and sweet honeybush with calming and soothing properties to support a healthy sleep cycle.

The overall cup of Valerian Sleep Support Honeybush is herbaceous and earthy with familiar notes of spearmint and lavender. The honeybush base brings richer flavor to the cup.

BENEFITS*
Valerian Sleep Support Honeybush is naturally caffeine free. It also contains compounds that increase gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is a naturally-occurring amino acid that reduces activity in the central nervous system. This results in relaxation, enhanced mood, better sleep, and pain relief.

The key ingredient in this blend is the herb valerian. It has a pungent aroma in its dried form but is hailed as an excellent herb for promoting sleep and reducing hot flashes.

Herbalist Steven Horne says this of the herb valerian, “Valerian is one of the three most popular herbs for sleep; the other two being hops and skullcap. Valerian is a reliable sedative to help you fall asleep and a useful remedy for improving the quality of sleep. It acts as a sedative without causing daytime drowsiness or impairing your ability to concentrate or perform tasks. It’s rarely used by itself for sleep and I think it works better as part of a formula. Valerian not only helps create a natural sleep cycle, something OTC sleep remedies do not do, it is also non-addictive.”

Researchers in a recent trial now consider valerian to be an alternative treatment for hot flashes. Their findings clearly show that valerian can reduce hot flash severity and frequency in a matter of weeks. Valerian's benefits for menopause symptoms are believed to be due to its richness in phytoestrogens, plant-based compounds that act as weak estrogens in the body, helping ease the effects of hormonal deficits.

Honeybush is a lesser known tisane that is rising in popularity. Closely related to the rooibos bush and also indigenous to South Africa, honeybush is equally beneficial. It is naturally sweet and has honey-like aroma and notes—hence its name. The leaves, bark and stems of this bush contain a variety of minerals including calcium, iron and zinc as well as other plant compounds with antioxidant benefits.

Chamomile possesses properties that may aid sleep and digestion. It also contains high levels of antioxidants that may play a role in lowering the risk of several diseases including heart disease and cancer.

Lemon balm tea has been used to help improve mood, slow cognitive decline, and decrease anxiety levels.

Passionflower has been said to help with insomnia, anxiety, hot flashes and relieve general pain in the body.

Lavender has been recognized for centuries for its ability to help promote sleep, boost mood, soothe anxiety and even improve skin health. Lavender is also rich in antioxidants.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS
Our Valerian Sleep Support Honeybush is excellent served hot or iced; plain or sweetened with sugar, honey or other sweeteners.

PREPARATION
Traditional Hot Tea

Measure one heaping teaspoon of tea leaves per one cup water into a tea filter or into an infuser of your choice. Keep in mind, the infuser you choose must be large enough to allow the tea leaves to swell and unfurl. This allows the tea leaves to release their full flavor. Place filter into teapot or mug. Bring filtered or freshly drawn water to a boil then pour into teapot or mug. Infuse 8-10 minutes. Remove the filter and discard or remove infuser and discard tea leaves. Garnish as desired with sugar, honey, sweetener and/or lemon slices.

Iced Tea
Measure six heaping teaspoons of tea leaves into a tea filter and place into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Bring 2 cups of filtered or freshly drawn water to a boil. Immediately pour boiled water over filter into teapot or heat-resistant pitcher. Infuse 8-10 minutes. Remove filter and sweeten tea with ½ cup sugar if desired. Add 2 cups of filtered or freshly drawn water to a serving pitcher. Pour in prepared tea and mix well. Add 2 cups ice and stir. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

Cold-infusion Method*
Measure four teaspoons of tea leaves into a tea filter and place inside a clean glass jar or small pitcher. Position filter so that the rooibos blend will be submerged and the top hangs over the side of the jar or pitcher so that leaves do not spill out once water is added. Pour four cups of filtered or freshly drawn water over the filter. Cover with lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate 24 hours.

*Cold-infused teas and tisanes have higher levels of antioxidants. To serve hot, simply pour the cold-infused tisane into a saucepan over medium heat and gently warm to desired temperature.
